「日本忍者映画史」要旨

日本忍者映画の歴史は今まで全体的に研究されていないため、研究家のマンス・トンプソンが８年間ほどかけて日本忍者映画の世界を明確化しようとしてきました。現在では、約８０本の日本忍者映画と映画資料を集め、また映画評論家や研究家と話したり、映画監督にインタビューをしたりすることにより、現在本を執筆するとともに日本忍者映画史について語りはじめています。本講演では、日本忍者映画の規模と進化を紹介しました。第三の忍者映画ブーム、代表的な映画や役者、社会的な背景を語りながら、基礎的な忍者映画史を話しました。忍者映画は次の三つの段階に区分できます。

第１ 戦前〜６０年代：　忍者 as 妖術使いと忍者コメディ

第２ ６０年代：忍者リアリズムとくノ一映画の時代

第３ ７０年代〜現在：メイク忍者映画グレイトアゲーン！

また、よく知られている豪傑自来也からあまり見られるチャンスがない貴重な映画映像まで紹介し、監督から聞いたバックストーリーも語りました。

Japanese Ninja Movie History

For the last 8 years, researcher Mance Thompson has been trying to unearth the hidden story of Japan's ninja movie industry. This history has until now gone unnoticed and unresearched by any Japanese movie critics, historians, or any other academics. As such, the speaker has personally amassed some 80 Japanese ninja movies and movie related materials, as well as consulted with movie critics and interviewed two directors who made ninja films in Japan. Having reached a clear picture of the Japanese ninja movie world up to this point, he has now begun sharing his research with the public in coordination with writing a book on the topic. The scale and evolution of the genre, three Japanese ninja booms, and major movies and figures(actors and directors) were all discussed during this presentation. The social factors that influenced the Japanese ninja movie industry were also included so that those new to the genre could develop a basic understanding of its history. The theme of the presentation was as follows:

Part I 1912-1960: Ninja as Magical Samurai and Ninja Comedy
Part II The 1960s: Ninja Realism and the Kunoichi Craze
Part III 1970s-Present Day: Making Japanese Ninja Movies Great Again

A few excerpts of flims such as the famous Gouketsu Jiraiya as well as some rare pre-war ninja films were shown and some of the back story learned from Japanese directors was shared during the presentation.
